Henry Nowak family say police failed them multiple times

Hampshire and Isle of Wight Chief Constable Alexis Boon expressed deep sorrow regarding the murder of Henry Nowak, describing it as a devastating tragedy. In a statement to ITV, Boon conveyed condolences to Henry’s family and all those close to him. He also acknowledged a failure on the part of the police during Henry’s final moments, apologizing for not providing the help he needed when it was most crucial.

The family has raised significant concerns beyond the incident itself, focusing on the police’s handling of the case and their treatment throughout the investigation. Boon emphasized that no family should be subjected to such experiences, highlighting the ongoing distress caused by the police response and subsequent proceedings.

The Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) is currently conducting an investigation into possible police shortcomings related to the response following Mr. Nowak’s stabbing. While the inquiry is expected to conclude early next year, a letter sent to the family in April mentioned that, after carefully reviewing the available evidence, no officers would face conduct or criminal investigations. The letter stated that no concerns about the officers’ actions were serious enough to warrant disciplinary action and noted that this decision would be continuously reviewed as the case progressed.

In July, however, the IOPC revealed that two officers were under investigation for potential gross misconduct. Derrick Campbell, the IOPC director of engagement, affirmed the organization’s commitment to uncovering all facts surrounding the case, including whether any officers should be subject to disciplinary proceedings. He stressed that the watchdog is working diligently to complete the investigation promptly while thoroughly pursuing every lead. Campbell also confirmed that investigators maintain regular communication with Henry Nowak’s family to keep them informed throughout the process
