Sir Keir Starmer: Europe can’t rely on US to ‘bankroll’ defence, Dublin event told

Sir Keir Starmer has emphasized the need for Europe to establish a unified security framework, highlighting that the shift in its defence relationship with the United States is a lasting change rather than a temporary disruption caused by the Trump administration. Speaking at a British Irish Chamber of Commerce (BICC) dinner held in Dublin, he stressed the importance of this collective approach alongside a common market, positioning the UK at the heart of these efforts.

During his address at Dublin City Hall, Sir Keir acknowledged that while the US-UK military, security, and intelligence partnership remains exceptionally strong, Europe itself must be empowered to assume greater responsibility for its defence and security. Sir Keir warned that the era of reliance on the US to sustain European defence is over, stating, “Things will not go back to the way they were before.” He conveyed this message directly to European leaders, reinforcing the idea that these developments reflect a permanent realignment, not merely a reaction to a single US presidency. Despite this, he was careful to affirm that the US relationship continues to be important and remains robust.

At the event, Sir Keir was honored with an honorary life membership from the British Irish Chamber of Commerce, recognizing his contributions. His remarks underline a strategic call for Europe to enhance its own defence capabilities in response to shifting geopolitical realities, while maintaining the strength of its transatlantic ties
