Halloween celebrations often revolve around food, but for individuals with food allergies, participating safely can be quite challenging. Whether attending parties or going trick-or-treating, managing allergies requires careful attention and planning to ensure both enjoyment and safety. A key question is how people with allergies can be included in Halloween festivities without risking exposure to allergens, and how others can contribute to creating an inclusive environment.
Fifteen-year-old Ciara, who is allergic to milk and eggs, shared her experiences navigating Halloween. She stressed the importance of meticulously checking every food packet and avoiding eating treats until she got home to be certain about their safety. Ciara feels that increasing awareness around allergies during Halloween could help everyone join in the fun. Her friends have been supportive, understanding her allergies and knowing how to respond if she were to experience an allergic reaction. Although teaching them emergency procedures was not easy or particularly enjoyable, Ciara felt it was necessary to keep safe.
Ciara carries EpiPens, which are adrenaline injectors crucial for treating severe allergic reactions. She noted that while many people show kindness and understanding towards her allergies, there are still some who do not fully grasp the potential severity of exposure to allergens. Her mother, Claire McGuigan, expressed pride in how well Ciara manages her condition. Claire described the emotional concerns all parents share but highlighted that the foremost worry is the allergy itself. She emphasized the importance of having a supportive circle of friends and of prioritizing harm prevention over relying solely on emergency medication.
Another child, eleven-year-old Caolán, is allergic to nuts, dairy, and eggs, and has experienced a life-threatening allergic reaction in the past. His mother, Colette Donaghy, pointed out that Caolán has developed a strong sense of awareness and risk management that many children his age do not possess. Colette underlined the need for children with allergies to be understood without being made to feel different. Regarding Halloween, she explained that Caolán prefers to trick-or-treat after other children, then communicates his allergies before receiving treats, which are always checked carefully. To minimize risks, Colette advocates for giving out individually wrapped sweets or alternatives like fruit or small toys, suggesting that these options can alleviate parental anxiety. She also mentioned the use of teal pumpkins as a signal that allergy-friendly treats are available at a particular house.
Niamh Kennedy, chair of Food Allergy NI and mother of three children with food allergies, highlighted the extra planning and concern that food-related celebrations often bring to families affected by allergies. She explained that such events require thorough checking of every food item and constant risk assessment. Kennedy advises that making celebrations inclusive involves forward-thinking measures, such as providing non-food alternatives, sharing clear ingredient information, communicating with families in advance, and exercising caution to avoid cross-contact. Her message is that thoughtfulness and understanding can significantly influence whether someone feels included in festive occasions
