How man’s Halloween house display has become bittersweet tradition

As Halloween approaches tonight, one man from Greater Manchester is taking the holiday celebrations to an extraordinary level. Dave Barron, 61, residing in Bramhall, has been transforming his home with Halloween decorations annually since 2011. This year, his theme centers around the popular film “Back to the Future,” a project he has been diligently working on since May.

Dave’s elaborate display is deeply personal, serving as a tribute to his late wife, Catherine. Over the years, he has raised more than £55,000 for Macmillan Cancer Support, the charity that cared for Catherine before she passed away in 2020. Reflecting on the emotional nature of the time, Dave shared, “Halloween is emotional for me. I miss Catherine tremendously. She’d think I’m an absolute lunatic, but she was always a big part of it and I think she’d be really proud.”

Supporting Dave in his preparations are his 27-year-old daughter Sarah, along with other family members and friends. Each Halloween event sees him handing out over 500 sweets generously donated by the local Tesco store. He also expressed gratitude for the contributions from various local businesses and individuals, including a timber company, a tyre firm, and a friend who creates banners, as well as those lending instruments and providing costumes.

One moment particularly moved Dave when he received a quick response to his Facebook post requesting access to a 1981 DeLorean DMC-12 to make his display as authentic as possible. A woman informed him that her husband owned one and was currently out driving it. This stranger kindly brought the iconic car from their home in Poynton and left it with Dave for the day. “It’s people stepping in like that that shows you how far community can stretch,” Dave remarked, highlighting the strong sense of support surrounding his heartfelt project
