UK weather: 10 days without rain after ‘wettest week in two years’

Just a week ago, the UK experienced a period of unsettled weather marked by its first named storms of the season, Austen and Bóelo. These systems brought significant rainfall, with Bóelo standing out for the particularly heavy downpours it produced.

The Environment Agency has reported that the combined rainfall from these two storms, together with an additional low-pressure system earlier in the week, resulted in the wettest week the UK has seen in two years. This marked a notable shift from the dry conditions that had previously prevailed.

Currently, an area of high pressure remains positioned over or near the UK, expected to persist for at least the next ten days. However, indications suggest that by mid-November this high-pressure system may weaken, allowing Atlantic low-pressure systems to move closer to the region once again.

If this pattern shift occurs, the UK could see a return to wetter and windier weather, with most locations likely receiving average or even above-average rainfall. This trend has also been connected to the ongoing El Niño event in the Pacific Ocean, which is intensifying and influencing more stormy and wet conditions across the UK during the late autumn and early winter months
