The Traitors: Bombshell confession as faithfuls finally turn the screw

Warning: This article contains spoilers from episode nine of the second series of The Celebrity Traitors.

After the traitors’ recent success in last Friday’s episode, the question remained whether they could simply cruise into the final. The outcome was soon revealed. Holding the symbolic double dagger, King Kenny wielded his special power that allowed him two votes, using it to eliminate another faithful from the competition. The tension for viewers was somewhat muted, however, as the two candidates facing banishment—Sharon Rooney and Joanne McNally—were both faithful players.

Despite the less dramatic cliffhanger, the faithfuls felt the impact deeply; they understood that the traitors had struck yet again just before the final on Friday. Michael Sheen expressed his frustration, saying, “We’ve got to pull something out of the bag.” This statement underscored the faithfuls’ urgent need for a shift in strategy. Joanne McNally became emotional as she exited, humorously attributing her tears to being “premenstrual” but reaffirming, “I was a hardcore faithful.” Praise for her came from Maya, who described Joanne as “a ball of fun,” while Kenny put on his best acting performance, feigning emotional difficulty over having the final vote and even comforting Sharon, an effort that certainly deserved an Oscar nomination.

Meanwhile, James Blunt took a lighter approach, searching the castle for whiskey like a teenager at a party’s end, only to find empty glasses. The traitors—Kenny, Maya, and James A—soon congregated at the turret, discussing their next move. Maya reflected, “The life of a traitor… it’s not for everyone,” hinting that James A’s enthusiasm for his villainous role may still be developing. King Kenny closed their meeting with the statement, “Let’s have faith,” delivered with a clear lack of irony.

In the break of dawn, Leigh-Anne Pinnock, known for her sharp instincts among the faithfuls, raised suspicions about James A possibly being a traitor. James Blunt greeted this accusation sarcastically, emphasizing caution: “I think that’s a good theory to start banishing the most innocent.” Notably absent from the breakfast gathering was Sharon, nicknamed Poundland Poirot, who had been recently placed on the chopping block again after narrowly escaping banishment earlier—her absence generating confusion among the faithfuls. Michael Sheen then gave a fiery motivational speech, reminiscent of his pep talk to the Welsh football squad before the 2022 World Cup: “Traitors… today is going to be a living hell for you, I am going to push and push and push and you are going to suffer today. This is the apocalypse. Vengeful daddy is in the house today.”

Conspiracy theories flourished at the breakfast table. Bash highlighted Michael as “the head of the round table,” while Kenny focused suspicion on James Blunt. Romesh pointed fingers at Maya, an actual traitor, which elicited surprise. Meanwhile, the ongoing fascination with peacock perfume persisted. Later, Michael shared his suspicions in the kitchen with Maya, telling her, “I think you could be a brilliant traitor, and if you and Kenny paired up, amazing.” A hint of relief appeared on Maya’s face when the group prepared for yet another mission involving jeeps, with Romesh expressing amusement at the challenge’s absurdity. Host Claudia Winkleman explained that they had to find and reconnect severed heads of murdered celebrities with their bodies buried in the castle gardens, which provoked laughter from Romesh: “It’s just so ridiculous. I love it though!”

During the mission, James Blunt tried to engage one group by leading them in singing his hit “Beautiful,” which had Leigh-Anne and Michael tapping along, but Kenny remained baffled, apparently unfamiliar with the song. This mission recycled elements from the first series’ “wailing in the well” challenge, pushing teams to match digital images of dead celebrities preserved in bell jars to their correct gravestones. Michael quipped on the surreal task, “Seeing Ross’s face when he was alive was enough to give a man pause, let alone when his dismembered head is looking out at you from a pickle jar.”

Back inside the castle, suspicion around Maya continued to rise. Romesh and Bash noted her subtle gameplay: “One of the greatest gliders in the game. Maybe Olympic level gliding,” as Bash put it. King Kenny was also under scrutiny. As the penultimate round table convened, spotlight turned on Michael due to his status and intellect. He revisited his previous suspicion of Leigh-Anne, accusing her of using her Big Mix dance with Miranda as a distraction on the night of Ross’s murder. Romesh targeted James Blunt for his frequent but often incorrect accusations. Attention soon shifted to the quieter traitors, James A and Maya, who were questioned about their whereabouts during the murder. Michael and James B deduced that Maya, Kenny, and James A had been in the library when Ross was killed.

In a surprising twist unprecedented in the history of the series, James A broke down and confessed to being a traitor at the table, admitting, “I was made a traitor without wanting to be.” The revelation stunned the group as James A explained, “I’ve had a unique experience on this that no one has had before, I wanted to be a faithful and that’s all I wanted to be. But I couldn’t just say ‘guys, vote for me.’” His confession spared everyone the difficulty of voting him out. As the episode concluded, Michael and Maya lingered by the firepit before calling it a night—Maya heading to the turret and appearing like “a dead woman walking,” with the formidable “DSI Sheen” continuing to pursue her
