An extraordinary flight took place when airline pilot Marnie Munns had the unique opportunity to captain a plane carrying her daughter, teachers, and classmates on a school trip to Iceland. The journey departed from Stansted Airport and was bound for Reykjavik, with around 30 passengers from Framlingham College in Suffolk on board. Among them was Marnie’s 17-year-old daughter, Lillian, making the trip especially memorable.
Marnie, who is from Cambridge, had arranged to swap her work schedule to ensure she could be at the controls of the Jet2 Airbus A321neo for this particular flight. This allowed her to share a rare and special experience with her daughter and the other students. Speaking about the trip, Lillian reflected on how unusual it was to both visit Iceland and have her mother as the pilot.
Describing the occasion, Marnie expressed what an honor it was to captain the aircraft while flying with her daughter and her peers aboard. What initially began as a plan to surprise Lillian on the day of departure gradually came to light earlier during a parents’ evening. Marnie recalled her daughter’s disbelief when she first shared the news that she would be flying the plane.
She elaborated on the significance of the moment, explaining, “Pilots will try to fly their family because it is such a unique experience and it is just a real pleasure, so it was nice to have a really lovely, personal day out.” This flight represented far more than just a trip; it was a special occasion blending Marnie’s professional life with an unforgettable family experience
