Positive News is broadening the reach of its popular What Went Right series by launching it as a weekly video podcast available on YouTube, Spotify, and other podcast platforms. This extension brings one of the publication’s most well-received written features—highlighting notable progress and positive developments—to a wider, multimedia audience. The original series, known for its optimistic coverage of significant advances, has generated a large following across Positive News’ website, social media channels, newsletters, and print editions.
The new podcast, released every Saturday, focuses each week on three key stories that illustrate meaningful progress. These episodes delve into diverse topics, ranging from scientific innovations and environmental solutions to social initiatives and community-driven change. Rather than just presenting headlines, the show aims to explore the underlying factors, key players, and potential for these solutions to be applied in other contexts.
Building on the strong foundation of the written series, What Went Right already ranks among the most-read content on Positive News’ digital platforms, with some social media posts reaching millions of views. The format’s popularity has made it a regular and beloved segment in the publication’s newsletter and print magazine as well.
The podcast is co-hosted by broadcaster and journalist Lucy Watson and Positive News’ chief digital editor Tom Pattinson, who are longtime friends and colleagues with extensive international journalism experience. Their engaging dynamic, shaped by years of reporting from different parts of the world, helps create conversations that are both informative and entertaining. As Pattinson notes, “We hear an awful lot about what’s going wrong in the world, but there are also some extraordinary things happening every week that rarely get the same attention. Whether it’s a breakthrough in medical research, a community taking on a powerful corporation or a new approach to tackling climate change, we want to give those stories the time they deserve.” Watson adds, “What Went Right is a wonderful opportunity to explore the other side of the news, the side we don’t get to hear about as often as we might like. There are so many remarkable stories of people finding solutions and making progress, and it’s inspiring to get under the skin of some of them. We want people to come away feeling better informed about the world, and perhaps a little more hopeful about where it’s heading.”
Following the success of Positive News’ previous podcast series, The Purpose Pioneers, which won Best Culture & Lifestyle Podcast at the Publisher Podcast Awards in July 2026, this new weekly show seeks to provide an alternative to the often overwhelming negative news cycle. Sean Wood, CEO of Positive News, explains, “News avoidance is one of the biggest challenges facing our industry. Many people are turning away from journalism not because they don’t care about the world, but because the relentless focus on what’s broken leaves them feeling overwhelmed and powerless. Our new What Went Right video podcast shows there’s another way – trustworthy, interesting journalism about progress and solutions.” New episodes are published every Saturday, inviting audiences to engage with stories of hope and real-world progress
