Rosie Hughes has made a name for herself as the star striker of Wrexham Women FC, a football club now owned by Hollywood stars Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney. Hughes has not only signed a semi-professional contract but has also appeared on television with Hollywood royalty, met actual royalty, and even scored a winning goal in front of almost 10,000 fans. However, when she is not scoring goals, Hughes is unlocking and locking prison doors in her day job as a prison officer at HMP Berwyn in Wrexham.
Hughes has been playing football for Wrexham for six years, scoring a remarkable 97 goals in 41 starts and one appearance as a substitute. Nonetheless, being a top striker doesn’t make her any less of a prison officer. She believes that her two jobs have several transferable skills. Communication and working as part of a team are massive skills for both football and a prison officer. A prison officer needs to be confident to excel at their job, just like a footballer, who has to be confident on the ball.
