King Charles has begun a nine-day Caribbean tour with his arrival in the Bahamas, marking his first visit to the region as the reigning monarch. Upon landing, he was warmly welcomed at the airport, where island officials received him with a ceremonial greeting. Dressed in a grey suit and sunglasses, the King’s presence was met with enthusiasm as he embarked on his initial official duties.
In preparation for the trip, Buckingham Palace confirmed that King Charles would openly confront the “colonial legacy” and the ramifications of the slave trade throughout his visit. However, aligning with the UK government’s stance, he will neither issue an apology for Britain’s involvement in the slave trade nor offer reparations. During his first public appearance, the King addressed young attendees, stating that it is “only right” to “acknowledge the great suffering and injustices of the past.”
Shortly after arriving, King Charles met with Governor General Dame Cynthia A. Pratt and Prime Minister Philip Edward of the Bahamas. He also inspected a guard of honour presented by the Royal Bahamas Defence Force on the runway. One of his first major engagements was at a youth rally held at Clifford Park, a site connected to his earlier visit as Prince of Wales during the Bahamas’ independence celebrations in 1973. There, he reflected on his five decades of commitment to combating climate change and emphasized the vulnerability of Caribbean islands, declaring that “our world cries out for healing.” Urging young people to take responsibility, he said, “in years to come, this will be surely be the measure of every person – how they answered the call to care for planet earth – the source of our life, our prosperity and our security.”
Buckingham Palace has indicated that the King’s itinerary will include opportunities to contemplate the slave trade’s legacy across all three countries he will visit, with planned stops at memorials and sites of remembrance. A palace spokesperson told the BBC that the tour’s primary focus would be on highlighting “the many modern partnerships and opportunities for the future,” particularly those having a transformative impact on the region. The spokesperson further explained that for King Charles, the journey represents both a new chapter and the continuation of a long-standing effort to engage with, understand, and educate others about the darker chapters of history. His visit, devised alongside the Bahamian, Guyanese, and Antiguan and Barbudan governments, emphasizes respect for the past while looking ahead to future aspirations.
Following his stay in the Bahamas, King Charles is scheduled to travel to Guyana, where his engagements will concentrate on environmental and biodiversity issues. His tour will then conclude in Antigua and Barbuda, where Queen Camilla will join him for the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM). At this biennial summit, leaders from 56 Commonwealth countries convene to discuss shared challenges and enhance cooperation, with the King set to deliver the keynote address in his role as Commonwealth leader
