Leanne Gregory, a woman from Stapleford in Nottinghamshire, tragically lost her life while trying to save her two sons after they were caught in a riptide during a family holiday in the Bahamas. The incident occurred as the family was celebrating their 10th wedding anniversary early. Leanne’s husband, Nathan Gregory, shared with the BBC that the boys had been playing and snorkeling in shallow water before being swept out to sea by the current. Despite both their children being rescued, Leanne was unable to be saved.
Nathan described the heartbreaking episode as unfolding rapidly, lasting less than ten minutes from start to finish. He called Leanne his “childhood sweetheart,” emphasizing their long-standing relationship that began when they were just 14 years old. At 36, Leanne was remembered as a deeply generous and loving person by Nathan, who spoke about their perfect relationship and her vital role as the mother and foundation of their family. He honored her as a hero for her selfless act of trying to rescue their sons.
The Royal Bahamas Police Force reported that after Leanne was swept away by the riptide, she was found unresponsive at the North Bimini Ferry Dock where CPR was attempted. She was then taken to a local clinic, where she was pronounced dead. The police noted that no foul play was suspected, and they are conducting an autopsy. The Foreign Office extended condolences to the family, confirming they were in contact with local authorities and providing support.
The community in Stapleford has rallied around Nathan and their children, with local representatives and organizations expressing their sympathy. Richard MacRae, a local council representative, described the community as close-knit and said the tragedy was especially devastating to those involved. A GoFundMe campaign has also been set up, raising nearly £9,000 to support Nathan and the boys as they cope with their loss. Throughout all of this, Nathan is focused on staying strong for his sons while expressing gratitude for the support they have received from both the airline and cruise company involved in their journey
