Prime Minister Andy Burnham has responded to criticism from opposition leader Kemi Badenoch regarding his participation in a celebrity edition of Channel 4’s popular show Gogglebox. Badenoch expressed surprise that Burnham had time to appear on the programme, noting on BBC Breakfast that even in her experience as a junior minister or secretary of state, she never found the hours to take part, pointing out the time commitment involved.
Burnham’s appearance was revealed as part of a special celebrity episode of Gogglebox, created to support the Stand Up To Cancer charity event. Joining Burnham on the show will be Steve Rotheram, the Labour mayor of the Liverpool City Region, who is also a friend of Burnham. Speaking to BBC Radio 5 Live, Burnham highlighted the significance of the annual charity special and the duo’s commitment to it. “It is always a moment in the annual calendar where we support Stand Up To Cancer through Gogglebox,” he remarked, adding that they were proud to participate.
Burnham also outlined his broader intention behind taking part, expressing a desire to uplift the public and offer hope during challenging times. He acknowledged that the programme’s format may not appeal to everyone but reinforced his dedication to the fight against cancer. “It’s Stand Up To Cancer night and I’ve always been somebody who puts my shoulder behind the fight against cancer,” he stated
