The complete route for the Tour de France’s anticipated visit to Liverpool in 2027 has been officially released, heightening anticipation as the world’s premier cycling race prepares to return to the UK. Organizers from A.S.O. unveiled the specific course that cyclists will take within Liverpool and the surrounding City Region, positioning the area prominently within this globally renowned sporting event.
During stage two of the men’s race, set for Saturday, 3 July 2027, the riders will embark from Keswick in Cumbria, travel through Lancashire, and pass through the boroughs of Knowsley and St Helens. The stage will culminate in a thrilling sprint finish along Liverpool’s famous waterfront, providing both locals and visitors with an exceptional opportunity to witness elite athletes compete on familiar roads. This visit marks only the fifth time the Tour de France has come to Britain and follows the race’s start in Edinburgh on Friday, 2 July, with three stages covering Scotland, northwest England, and Wales.
Liverpool’s involvement in both the men’s and women’s races was highlighted during the official presentation held at the Palais des Congrès in Paris. The event is expected to attract large crowds and deliver a significant financial boost to the local tourism economy. It will also shine a spotlight on Liverpool City Region’s active travel initiatives, which include over 600 kilometers of new walking and cycling paths. The Tour de France’s arrival complements the region’s impressive recent history of hosting major sporting and cultural events and rounds out a trio of high-profile occasions, alongside the upcoming UEFA EURO 2028 matches at Everton FC’s stadium and the 2030 World Gymnastics Championships.
Local leaders expressed their enthusiasm for the event. Cllr Liam Robinson, Leader of Liverpool City Council, described the moment as a milestone for the city, noting the global exposure Liverpool will receive and the confidence the event represents in the area’s capabilities. Mayor Steve Rotheram emphasized the Tour’s global appeal and the inspiration it could bring to encourage cycling within the community. Both Knowsley and St Helens council leaders also spoke positively about the route passing through their boroughs, highlighting local landmarks and the potential for community engagement and lasting legacies. Notably, Britain will be the first nation outside France to host starts for both the Tour de France and the Tour de France Femmes avec Zwift in the same year, underscoring the historic nature of the 2027 event.
Intermediate sprint points across the British stages have been confirmed, including locations such as Newcastle, the Scottish Borders, Morecambe, and Llandrindod Wells. Paul Bush, Managing Director of Grand Départ GB 2027, described the dual starts in Britain as an extraordinary milestone. The Tour will be supported by JOY, a social impact initiative designed to ensure the event benefits extend beyond the competition itself. All six British stages will be broadcast live across free-to-air UK television on Five, as well as TNT Sports, which will cover the entirety of the 2027 races
