Barclays cutting 5,000 jobs as it increases reliance on AI

Barclays has announced plans to reduce its workforce by approximately 5,000 positions as it integrates more artificial intelligence (AI) into its operations. These reductions represent about 5% of its global employee base, primarily affecting operational and functional positions.

This workforce downsizing is part of Barclays’ broader modernization strategy, with AI enhancements serving as a key component of this ongoing transformation. The bank is concluding a three-year cost-cutting initiative focused mainly on its UK retail banking segment, although its investment banking division has also been impacted. Despite the job reductions, Barclays reported a profit of £2.3 billion for the quarter ending in September, which exceeded last year’s figures but was slightly below expectations.

Economists are closely monitoring corporate earnings to assess whether investments in AI and other new technologies are improving operational efficiency and reducing staffing needs. Barclays’ CEO, CS Venkatakrishnan, emphasized that the job cuts reflect the bank’s substantial technology investments aimed at simplifying and enhancing its operations. He stated, “That is driving the bulk of the efficiency gains that you’ve seen so far.”

Venkatakrishnan also highlighted the evolving role of AI within the company, describing it as “the icing on the cake,” adding, “it’s not the cake – because you need to do the infrastructure build to get the benefits of AI.” Barclays noted that about 60% of these reductions will occur within its support functions, including roles among developers, underscoring the impact of technological upgrades on these areas
