Axel Rudakubana, the Southport killer currently serving a life sentence for the murders of three young girls, is set to face trial next year over allegations that he threw boiling water mixed with sugar at a prison officer. The incident reportedly occurred during his time at HMP Belmarsh, a high-security prison in south London.
During a videolink appearance at the Old Bailey on Monday, Rudakubana, who is 20 years old, confirmed his identity but did not engage further. He faces multiple charges, including attempted grievous bodily harm of a prison officer, two additional assaults on officers, and possession of a knife or another offensive weapon. These incidents allegedly took place on separate dates last year while he was incarcerated at Belmarsh.
Rudakubana is serving a life sentence for the murders of Alice da Silva Aguiar, aged nine, Bebe King, aged six, and Elsie Dot Stancombe, aged seven, as well as the attempted murder of eight other children and two adults during an attack at a Taylor Swift-themed dance class on 29 July 2024. The specific claim about the boiling water incident says that on 8 May last year, he threw hot water through a hatch in his cell door. Additionally, two days earlier, on 6 May, it is alleged that he threatened a female officer with being “soaked” if she did not pass him a newspaper and subsequently threw liquid at her. Another charge stems from an incident on 28 October when Rudakubana allegedly punched a male officer.
The charge relating to possession of an offensive weapon concerns sharpened stone fragments, which the prosecution contends were prised from the floor of his cell. Following the alleged assaults, Rudakubana was transferred from HMP Belmarsh to Broadmoor high-security psychiatric hospital in July. A preliminary hearing has been scheduled for 5 February, with a trial provisionally set for 8 October 2027
