A police officer in Nottingham city centre was shot in the foot during an incident early on Sunday morning, prompting a swift response from Nottinghamshire Police. The officer, who had approached two individuals at a bus stop on Angel Row shortly before 04:50 BST, remains hospitalized in stable condition. Following the shooting, four people were detained in connection with the event, including a woman suspected of grievous bodily harm and firearm possession.
The arrests included two women aged 27 and 25, and a 24-year-old man, all taken into custody after a vehicle was stopped in the Radford area later that evening. Another man, aged 30, was apprehended in Bedfordshire during the early hours of Monday. The 27-year-old woman faces charges related to grievous bodily harm with intent and possession of a firearm with intent to endanger life. Meanwhile, the other three individuals are suspected of assisting an offender.
Assistant Chief Constable Claire Rukas commented on the ongoing investigation, emphasizing the efforts of a dedicated team working to uncover the full circumstances surrounding the shooting. “I am pleased that four arrests have now been made and hope this provides some reassurance to the public as those detained are questioned in connection with the discharge of the firearm,” she said. The police cordon that was established around Angel Row has since been lifted, with ACC Rukas expressing gratitude to local residents and businesses for their cooperation during the inquiry. She also requested privacy for the injured officer, acknowledging the support he is receiving from his colleagues and loved ones.
Nottinghamshire Police and Crime Commissioner Gary Godden described the officer’s injuries as “not life-threatening” but likely “life-altering,” highlighting the inherent risks faced by police officers. Labour MP for Nottingham East, Nadia Whittome, noted that the officer had undergone surgery and was now out of the operating room. Reflecting on the incident, she remarked, “This incident will no doubt be damaging to the reputation of the city, especially because of our past, but I think that we also saw was an extremely rare incident that was the worst of our city. But we also saw the best of our city.” She praised the community spirit displayed in the early hours as people came together to help in the aftermath of the shooting
