A tragic accident occurred when a two-year-old boy fell from a fourth-floor window at a hotel in Cyprus, leading to his death. The father, Joshua Foster, has been fined €3,000 (£2,500) after being found responsible for the incident. According to the Paphos District Court, Foster had placed his son on a windowsill to show him a nearby waterpark, mistakenly believing the window was closed. He then “lost control” of the child, who fell approximately 40 feet (12.1 meters) from the King Evelthon Beach Hotel and Resort on 12 July, which was the family’s first day of their holiday in Chlorakas.
Foster, aged 37 and originally from Essex, earlier admitted to causing death through a reckless, rash, or dangerous act. Following the sentencing, he expressed gratitude for the support he had received and said, “I’m looking forward to going home and being with my wife and daughter.” The family later released a statement expressing their lasting grief, saying, “We are relieved that this process is now over, but for our family, the consequences of this tragedy will never end. Our son was deeply loved and will be forever missed. His loss is something we carry with us every day.”
Before the incident, the family had spent the day enjoying activities and swimming, preparing to have dinner later in the evening. Foster, who works as an auditor, had arrived in Cyprus just hours earlier with his wife, two children, and in-laws. In a voluntary police statement, Foster explained that the boy “fell before he had a chance to grab him,” after being placed on the windowsill. While Foster had alcohol in his system, his lawyer clarified that this was not a significant factor in the case and emphasized that there was no evidence he was intoxicated.
Following the sentencing, Foster’s lawyer Alexandros Alexandrou criticized the fact that the case had proceeded to court, stating it “should have never gone to court.” Alexandrou revealed that Foster was detained for eight days after the incident and had to call his daughter while in custody to explain what had happened. He added, “Within this three months, there was a lost opportunity for this man to grieve as he wanted to, to be with his family.” The lawyer described his client as an “incredible father” and “an exemplary family man,” supported by a loving family who have stood by him throughout this difficult time
