Douglas Whitfield, the operations director at South East Water, confirmed that while standpipes are still included in the company’s drought contingency plans, their use is currently considered unlikely. Although a wet winter is predicted, precise timing remains uncertain. In response, South East Water is implementing various measures aimed at safeguarding water supplies.
Serving over two million customers, South East Water has deployed 92 repair teams throughout Sussex and Kent. These crews focus on fixing leaks to reduce water loss within the network. According to a recent customer communication, the company has optimized water pressure across the region and has more than doubled the number of leak response teams, increasing from seven to sixteen.
Since April 1st, South East Water reports that more than 1,300 leaks have been repaired, bringing the current number of leaks in the area down from 181 to 97. Meanwhile, Wessex Water—responsible for supplying the Wimbleball area—implemented its first hosepipe ban in 50 years back in August. The company states that these restrictions will continue for the foreseeable future as part of ongoing conservation efforts.
Wessex Water has also increased leak repairs, transferred water from more sustainable sources, and adjusted water pressure in some communities to help preserve supplies. Will Willoughby, director of water supply at Wessex Water, noted the unprecedented pressure on the network: “We saw record levels of demand through the network – and it sustained above the 400 million litres a day for 48 days, which is far and away the toughest year that we’ve seen in terms of that height in demand.” He reassured customers that the impact should be minimal but encouraged careful water use. Additionally, Paul Tompkins, deputy president of the National Farmers’ Union, described the year as “torrid” for farmers, citing difficulties in harvesting crops and providing water for livestock, and warning that a dry winter could adversely affect next year’s harvest
