Crew in Lewis fishing boat tragedy named by police

Douglas Craigie has been identified as the fisherman whose body was recovered following the disappearance of a fishing boat off the Western Isles on Tuesday. Craigie was 49 years old. His two crewmates, Norman Murray, aged 40 and also known as Tam, and 23-year-old Murdo Morrison, remain missing. All three men hail from Lewis and were aboard the fishing vessel named Kilda when it went missing near the Port of Ness, located on the northern coast of Lewis.

The fishing trip began early Tuesday morning, with the crew believed to have set sail from Brevaig on the west coast of Lewis around 7:30 a.m. Their plan was to fish in the Port of Ness area. However, the Kilda was reported overdue by 9:20 p.m. that evening. Despite challenging weather conditions including gale-force winds, search operations were carried out extensively on Wednesday. The Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA) and coastguard teams, supported by aircraft, led the efforts to locate the missing vessel and crew. Although the search was paused late Wednesday, it resumed the following day.

The discovery of Douglas Craigie’s body occurred near Port of Ness at approximately 2:45 a.m. on Wednesday. Chief Inspector Ross McCartney, who oversees the Western Isles policing area, expressed condolences and emphasized the support being provided to the families. He stated, “Our thoughts are with everyone affected by this tragic incident,” and urged respect for the privacy of the families during these difficult times. McCartney also reassured that collaboration continues with the HM Coastguard and RNLI in searching for the vessel and the two missing men, while advising locals against taking part in risky search efforts due to harsh conditions. Anyone with relevant information was encouraged to contact the police by calling 101 and quoting the reference number 3575 of 13 October.

Meanwhile, a minute of silence was observed earlier during the Royal National Mòd—a prominent event celebrating Gaelic culture and language held in Glasgow. The Western Isles, known as the heartland of the Gaelic language, mourn the tragedy deeply. Police presence remains in the Port of Ness area as the search for the missing fishermen continues
