Witnesses reported that Mogan threw chewing gum at Semenyo, striking the right side of his shorts. According to a statement read in court, Neil Sherratt, a Liverpool supporter who sits beside Mogan during matches, observed him approaching the pitch from the disabled section of the Main Stand. Sherratt recalled hearing Mogan shout something akin to “hurry up,” prompting Semenyo to turn toward him.
Sherratt noted that Semenyo appeared shocked and seemed to respond with “you what.” Another Liverpool fan, Nicholas Collins, described Mogan’s behavior after the incident as “very cocky and brazen,” adding that Mogan threatened to assault police officers if they tried to intervene. During a police interview the next day, Mogan, who was accompanied by an intermediary at court, admitted shouting at Semenyo to hurry up. He also claimed that Semenyo had called him “a cripple,” which upset him, and stated that he had thrown the chewing gum on the floor rather than at the footballer.
The prosecution contended that Mogan lied during his interview with police, according to Jones, who presented the case to the court. Semenyo is anticipated to provide testimony via videolink as the trial proceeds. Mogan, who resides in Templehill Close, Dovecot, denies the charge of racially aggravated behavior.
