Joe Cordina was 'retaliating' when he punched man to ground – court

Former boxing world champion Joe Cordina is currently on trial, accused of assault by beating following an incident at a petrol station on February 27 involving Jamie O’Brien. O’Brien has already pleaded guilty to an assault charge linked to the same confrontation, while a second charge against Cordina was recently dropped. The case has been heard at Cardiff Magistrates’ Court.

The dispute came to public attention after a video, recorded by a bystander at a Texaco garage in the Pentwyn district of Cardiff, was published online. O’Brien’s sister told police that her brother bore a strong dislike toward Cordina and was concerned that he might have deliberately sought him out. CCTV footage presented to the court shows Cordina filling his car before walking over to where O’Brien was standing on the pavement.

Prosecutor Alex Orndal described how O’Brien initially pushed Cordina with his shoulder, prompting Cordina to strike him with a punch that was strong enough to knock him to the ground. Cordina then allegedly pushed O’Brien repeatedly. Orndal noted that Cordina “initiated the confrontation” and was “not protecting himself but retaliating.” Further aggression followed as Cordina raised a golf club and O’Brien lunged at him, leading to an exchange of blows. Although O’Brien was eventually restrained and no longer posed a threat, Cordina is said to have thrown an additional punch.

During a police interview, Cordina denied committing the assault, explaining that after being shoved, he felt threatened and reacted instinctively to O’Brien’s behavior. His defence barrister, Tom Crowther KC, highlighted concerns raised by O’Brien’s family members after recognizing him in the video circulating online. Crowther also suggested that O’Brien and others appeared to be “watching and waiting” for Cordina, implying the incident might have been premeditated. The investigating officer, PC Samuel Penman, acknowledged that the filming began before any physical altercation and admitted it was an oversight not to question O’Brien’s sister about her belief that her brother had a vendetta against Cordina. The trial is ongoing
