For over three decades, Michele Ross has dedicated her career to education, helping individuals to develop, grow, and create brighter futures. In her role as a manager at Liverpool Adult Learning Service, Michele’s work is deeply grounded in the conviction that education has the power to transform lives. As Black History Month approaches, she reflects on her family’s longstanding ties to Liverpool, the resilience of its Black communities, and her aspirations for the generations to come.
Michele’s connection to Liverpool spans multiple generations, particularly through her family’s roots in the city. Remarkably, her grandmother was born in the early 1900s on Tagus Street in the L8 area and attended the very same school where Michele now works. This connection between past and present illustrates the enduring impact that education, family, and community have in shaping lives over time. Michele highlights this continuity, saying, “I believe education is the key to an inspired life, and a good education is passed through the generations.”
Throughout her career, Michele has always viewed education as something that goes beyond merely awarding qualifications. For her, it’s about helping people discover their potential and gain access to opportunities that can significantly alter their life paths. She emphasizes the importance of support, inclusion, and feeling valued, which has driven her dedication to community work. She explains, “For me, it has always been about more than delivering a service. It’s about building relationships, listening to people and helping to create opportunities that can make a real difference to their lives.” By fostering these connections, Michele plays a crucial role in opening doors for individuals to achieve new skills and take meaningful steps forward.
Having spent many years involved in education and community work in Liverpool, Michele has witnessed considerable changes within the city. Despite these shifts, she believes the core strengths of Liverpool’s Black communities remain steadfast—characteristics such as perseverance, resilience, independence, and the ability to overcome adversity and racism. She stresses the importance of acknowledging the significant contributions Black people have made throughout Liverpool’s history and continue to make today. Recognizing these contributions is essential to honoring the city’s identity and promoting fairness and equality for everyone. For Michele, community means belonging to a larger family united by shared values and interests, a connection she experiences personally through the accomplishments of her own family. Her son, who served and was decorated in the Royal Air Force before retiring, later worked as a firefighter and eventually led firefighter training in Merseyside. Her grandson has followed in that firefighting tradition as well. Michele’s pride in their achievements illustrates the many ways people contribute to their communities.
This year’s Black History Month theme, *Honouring Our Communities*, resonates strongly with Michele’s beliefs. To her, it is about celebrating those who make a positive difference in neighborhoods, families, and learning environments. She underscores the importance of recognizing the efforts of individuals whose work often goes unnoticed. Michele’s advice to young people eager to create change is straightforward: “Get involved!” She encourages active participation and acknowledges that everyone has something valuable to bring.
Looking forward, Michele hopes to see future generations growing up in Liverpool as part of a city where belonging is universal and opportunities for success are available to all, regardless of background. She envisions a Liverpool that is more equitable, compassionate, and inclusive, where education continues to open doors and support personal growth. This vision reflects the fundamental values that have guided Michele’s career: opportunity, inclusion, and the belief that investing in people benefits the entire community. From her grandmother’s early days in L8 to her own work in adult education, Michele’s story serves as a powerful reminder that communities are strengthened across generations through mutual support and shared opportunity. During Black History Month, her experience highlights the importance of honoring everyday heroes who help others learn, develop, and create better futures
