Boyega described the legacy of his friend Damilola as an inspiration to “be able to be unrealistic with your dreams.” He recalled a poem Damilola frequently recited, which emphasized a strong sense of purpose and ambition: “I will travel far and wide to choose my destiny and remould the world, I know it is my destiny to defend the world, which I hope to achieve in my lifetime.” Boyega highlighted how the poem illustrated Damilola’s focus on his future rather than his immediate surroundings, questioning his own excuses in comparison.
Tunde, Damilola’s brother, emphasized the significance of retelling his brother’s story even more than 25 years after the tragedy. He pointed out that many young people today were not alive at the time and now have the opportunity to see Damilola as a person—a young boy with hopes and dreams abruptly ended by tragedy.
