Simon Morris, a resident of Cardiff, shared how a routine heart screening uncovered that he had unknowingly experienced a heart attack and led to treatment that may have saved his life. At the age of 55, Morris decided to undergo a cardiac scan, spending £300, after his daughter had benefited from a free screening offered by a Welsh charity. Having never had such a test before, he viewed it as a straightforward precaution, saying, “I was 55, I’d never had such a scan before, so I thought, why not… just get it done and out of the way.” He later reflected, “It turns out it was the best £300 I’ve ever spent.”
Following the scan, medical professionals advised Morris to go to the hospital, where further tests revealed that he required an angioplasty to reopen arteries that had become narrowed or blocked. The investigation also showed that he had suffered a “silent” heart attack, as he had experienced no obvious symptoms at the time. Looking back, Morris recalled some warning signs he had overlooked: “When I was going for big walks with my daughter and my son there were pains in the chest area which I just attributed to stomach issues,” he told BBC Radio Wales Breakfast. He added with some regret, “But now… I look back and go, ‘what an idiot. You should have done something about that then. That was your chance, you missed it.'”
Since completing cardiac rehabilitation, Morris has returned to an active lifestyle. One of his goals has been to climb Yr Wyddfa, also known as Snowdon, while raising £10,000 for the charity Calon Hearts UK, which had provided his original heart scan. He expressed gratitude toward the charity’s cardiologist who first identified his heart condition during the screening.
Additionally, Morris has become involved in raising awareness about the charity’s services, which include CPR training and free heart screening for individuals aged 15 and a half to 26, as well as partially funded tests for older people. Explaining his motivation, he said, “I wanted to give something back to the charity that had potentially saved my life, and if I was going to do something, it felt appropriate to take on something as big as Yr Wyddfa.
