David Barraclough has been sentenced to life imprisonment after murdering his wife, Carolann Barraclough, and concealing her death by hiding her body in a chest freezer. The tragic incident occurred in February at their home in Horbury, near Wakefield. Following the killing, Barraclough maintained a facade, telling family and friends that Carolann was seriously ill and hospitalized, even sending messages from her phone to create the illusion that she was recovering.
During his trial at Leeds Crown Court, Barraclough changed his plea to guilty on the very first day but chose not to attend the sentencing hearing. The court established that Carolann was killed between the 19th and 21st of February. After the murder, Barraclough bound her body and placed it inside a freezer located in the utility room of their home. For nearly two weeks, he deceived those around him by insisting she was in the hospital and was the only person allowed to see her.
Prosecutors outlined how Barraclough duped Carolann’s children, family members, friends, and neighbors by fabricating stories about her condition. He went so far as to stop the children from entering the freezer’s location and used her phone to send reassuring messages that she would soon return home. On March 5, he confessed to the murder by walking into Normanton Police Station and declaring, “I’ve killed my wife.” Police officers subsequently discovered Carolann’s body inside the freezer at the family residence.
The Crown Prosecution Service highlighted Barraclough’s bizarre behavior in the aftermath of the crime, noting that he continued with daily activities such as visiting pubs, withdrawing large sums of money from a joint account, and even downloading a dating app merely two days after Carolann’s death. Although he claimed self-defense, alleging he had been hit with a hammer, CCTV footage revealed no injuries, leading prosecutors to dismiss his version of events. Jill May, a senior crown prosecutor, remarked on the cruel nature of Barraclough’s actions and commended Carolann’s eldest daughter for her “incredible bravery” in giving evidence during the trial.
Carolann Barraclough’s family paid tribute to her in a statement read to the court, describing her as “the bright light of our family” whose “joy was infectious.” They expressed their deep loss, calling her an indispensable part of their lives and lamenting the darkness left by her absence. Additionally, a statement from her three children—who are all autistic—highlighted the disruption caused by the deception. The children were told their mother was in hospital when, tragically, she was actually hidden in their own home, resulting in a loss of security, familiarity, and the future they had hoped to share with her
