The High Court has been informed that Thames Valley Police has acknowledged the unlawfulness of the search warrants used earlier this year to raid the homes of Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor. The force recognized that the court’s original decision to issue these warrants under a particular piece of legislation was incorrect when permission was granted on 19 February.
Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor was arrested by Thames Valley Police on suspicion of misconduct in public office, charges which he denies. The warrants that led to the searches were authorized before his arrest, and his legal team has challenged their validity through a judicial review targeting both the chief constable of Thames Valley Police and the Central Criminal Court.
This investigation stems from documents released by the US Department of Justice, which alleged that Andrew, while serving as a UK trade envoy in 2010, passed confidential information to a convicted sex offender. He has consistently maintained his innocence concerning any allegations linked to Epstein. During raids at his residences, the police seized documents and electronic devices under warrants stipulating that only materials unrelated to confidential business or official roles should be taken. Thames Valley Police now admits that the judge who approved the warrants was not in a position to be certain about these conditions.
A spokesperson for Thames Valley Police stated that the decision to quash the warrants relates solely to the legal grounds on which they were issued, and not to the ongoing investigation itself. The force insists it provided the court with all relevant information and followed proper legal procedures throughout. Legal debates continue regarding how the seized materials will be handled and if they can be kept to support the investigation.
