Royal Navy service member charged with spying

A member of the Royal Navy has been formally charged with espionage, police authorities have announced. The individual, identified as 24-year-old Teddy Young from Bedfordshire, faces allegations under the National Security Act (NSA). These allegations include obtaining protected information with the intent to benefit an undisclosed foreign nation.

Young was taken into custody following his arrest at his home in Bedfordshire on Tuesday. He remains in custody and is scheduled to appear before Westminster Magistrates’ Court this Thursday. The period covered by the charges spans from 26 November 2024 to 21 May 2025, with accusations of preparing to disclose protected information in violation of the NSA.

Commander Helen Flanagan, who leads Counter-Terrorism Policing London, emphasized the gravity of the situation, stating, “These are very serious charges against a serving member of the armed forces.” She further stressed the close collaboration between police and the Ministry of Defence to address and minimize any security risks related to the investigation.

The Royal Navy also confirmed the charges but declined to comment further due to ongoing legal proceedings. Officials have made clear that the allegations are unrelated to the recent RAF Fairford event. The accused is suspected of having knowingly compromised the safety or interests of the United Kingdom by acquiring, copying, or retaining sensitive information to benefit a foreign power
