Two years ago, Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) sparked significant controversy when it relaunched the Jaguar brand, particularly due to a teaser advertisement that many labeled as “woke” and a concept car featuring a “Barbie pink” color, which faced widespread ridicule. Now, the company has revealed its first new model publicly: the all-electric Type 01, showcased in New York. This vehicle represents a bold and transformative shift for the iconic brand, combining modern electric technology with elements inspired by Jaguar’s heritage.
The Type 01 is a striking four-door “Grand Tourer” featuring a long bonnet that pays homage to the classic 1960s Jaguar E-Type. It marks a major investment by JLR, which has funneled billions of pounds into reinventing Jaguar as an all-electric marque. Despite this significant commitment, reactions to the car’s design and the company’s fully electric vision have been quite varied. Technically impressive, the Type 01 boasts roughly 1000 horsepower from its electric motors and can accelerate from 0 to 62 mph in just 3.2 seconds. Its driving range is reported to be up to 320 miles at sustained highway speeds. JLR has labeled this model their “most technically advanced, powerful and aerodynamic Jaguar ever engineered.” However, it comes with a steep price, starting at £130,000 in the UK and $130,500 in the US.
The unveiling generated a wave of mixed feedback, particularly on social media platforms. Some critics expressed harsh opinions about the design. Facebook user Ken Katch compared the Type 01 to “a Cybertruck and a Bentley Continental had an illegitimate child,” referencing the polarizing looks of Tesla’s pickup truck. Meanwhile, luxury car consultant Craig Kinnersley described the vehicle as an “unmitigated catastrophe,” likening it to a hearse with no recognizable Jaguar flair. He added a stark comment: “We are watching the people running JLR dance on the brand’s grave.” On the other hand, some posts found the car to be “at least it isn’t boring.” Alistair Weaver from the sales platform Edmunds acknowledged that while the car’s appearance is polarizing, Jaguar deserves credit for taking a distinctive design approach, noting, “If Jaguar designed a car that looked like anything else, it would have had no hope.” However, he cautioned that the brand faces significant challenges in the US market, where electric vehicle popularity is in decline.
Despite the launch, the future of Jaguar hangs in uncertainty. Automotive journalist Steve Fowler described the Type 01 as potentially “a last throw of the dice” for JLR, pointing to previous struggles the company has had with making Jaguar profitable. The key question now is whether there are enough buyers willing to invest £130,000 in a uniquely styled, high-end electric car amidst competition from established luxury brands like Porsche and Mercedes-AMG, as well as emerging Chinese marques such as Denza. Ginny Buckley from the electric car site Electrifying.com emphasizes that beyond past controversies and design debates, the decisive factor is whether Jaguar has managed to produce something truly exceptional. She believes the car is impressive enough to win over critics but acknowledges the bigger hurdle is convincing consumers to make a purchase. Fowler concurs: “The car is good enough to do it. Whether the Jaguar brand is good enough remains to be seen.”
