US removes all bombers from RAF Fairford back to home stations

The United States has recently pulled all of its bomber aircraft from RAF Fairford, a British military base currently under scrutiny by counter-terrorism authorities following a significant security incident. This move was confirmed in an official statement from a US department on Sunday, indicating that the bombers had been relocated back to American bases.

Although no explicit justification was provided for the withdrawal, the decision came shortly after a notable event on 27 September, when police reported three suspicious vehicles near the Gloucestershire airbase. Initially, five men—UK nationals between the ages of 23 and 25 from London—were detained on suspicion of terror-related offenses. They were arrested in the early hours after reports of vehicles approaching the US Air Force-operated base. The men were suspected of explosives charges and preparing a terrorist act but were subsequently released on police bail. Later, a sixth man, described as a UK-Iranian national aged 25, was also arrested and released under similar conditions.

Although Whitehall officials have not openly linked the American troop withdrawal to the incident, sources conveyed to the BBC indicate the decision was operational and military rather than political, with communication occurring between American and British military authorities. The UK Ministry of Defence has chosen not to comment on the matter. In the aftermath of the event, Prime Minister Andy Burnham mentioned that there were “strong indications” of Iranian involvement but refrained from elaborating further. Iran, however, has firmly denied any connection to the occurrence.

RAF Fairford has long been an essential forward operating location for the US Air Force. Recently, it has been instrumental for missions targeting the Middle East, following the UK’s approval for the US to use the base for defensive operations against Iran. Tehran has previously warned that any base involved in aggression against Iranian territory would be deemed a legitimate target by its forces. Additionally, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio suggested on Fox News that the incident evidently involved “the hands of a foreign actor,” without providing additional specifics due to operational constraints. Meanwhile, US President Donald Trump expressed his surprise over the release of the initially detained five men, asserting that US knowledge about the individuals would have prevented such a decision, and emphasizing the close cooperation between the UK and US in this matter
