Mum of baby found on Bangor shoreline urged to call special number

Police in North Wales have established a dedicated helpline to reach out to the mother of a newborn girl whose body was discovered along a shoreline near Bangor. The infant was found by a member of the public on the Menai Strait shore close to Siliwen Road in Gwynedd last Sunday afternoon, shortly before 5 p.m. BST.

Following the discovery, authorities conducted a post-mortem examination which confirmed the baby was female and suggested she may have been in the water for a period potentially spanning several weeks. Superintendent Llinos Davies of North Wales Police emphasized that a specialist was available to speak confidentially with the mother, encouraging her to come forward without fear. “We understand that you may be scared to come forward, but we urge you to contact us,” Davies stated, assuring that the mother’s safety and well-being would remain a priority.

In addition to police appeals, Fiona Giraud, director of midwifery and women’s services at Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board, also made a direct plea to the mother to get in touch. Superintendent Davies elaborated that the specialist’s role is to offer compassionate listening and support without judgment. She urged the mother to consider confiding in a trusted individual if calling the helpline seemed too difficult, such as a friend, family member, neighbor, or healthcare professional.

The police have made clear that the helpline is intended exclusively for the mother’s use and have appealed not only to her but also to the father and anyone who might have relevant information, including friends, relatives, neighbors, or colleagues. They assured that all information and names shared would be handled with strict confidentiality and cautioned against speculation regarding the circumstances of the baby’s death. Officers are also seeking the help of the public, especially those who regularly walked in the Siliwen Road and Ashley Fields areas between August 30 and September 27. They request any photos or videos taken near the Menai Strait shoreline during that period to be submitted via the force’s major incident public portal
