Men in court over alleged plot to target Manchester Jewish community

Two men from Iran have appeared in court facing terrorism-related charges linked to an alleged scheme aimed at targeting the Jewish community in Manchester using a homemade explosive device. Rahman Salehi, 34, residing in Salford, and 36-year-old Salam Ahmadyan, originally from Liverpool, were formally charged at Westminster Magistrates’ Court. They stand accused of preparing or aiding in the preparation of a terrorist act on or before 20 September.

Among the locations under suspicion is the Heaton Park synagogue, a site previously attacked last year. Both Salehi and Ahmadyan, who arrived in the UK via small boats, were arrested in Manchester’s Northern Quarter just before Yom Kippur, the most sacred day in the Jewish religious calendar. Following their court appearance, they were remanded in custody until 23 October, when they will next be heard at the Old Bailey in London.

Police investigations included searches of properties at Epworth Street in Liverpool and Lancaster Road in Salford. According to the Metropolitan Police, the suspects allegedly sought instructions for manufacturing a chlorine bomb and had acquired liquids and materials used in making an improvised explosive device. They are also believed to have conducted research and reconnaissance on several potential targets.

The prosecution presented evidence detailing “hostile reconnaissance” activities at buildings in Manchester, notably at the Heaton Park synagogue, where two British Jews, Melvin Kravitz and Adrian Daulby, were killed in an attack during Yom Kippur last year. Additionally, surveillance was reportedly carried out at Manchester’s Jewish Museum. The defendants are said to have been receiving directions from another Iranian individual thought to be located in Iran
