The newest addition to the Royal Navy’s fleet, the HMS Agamemnon, an Astute-class nuclear-powered submarine, has reached its base at HM Naval Base Clyde in Faslane, Scotland. This advanced hunter-killer submarine will now commence sea trials and undergo further operational preparations. As the sixth submarine of its class, HMS Agamemnon is outfitted with both tomahawk land-attack missiles and torpedoes, capable of engaging targets as far as 30 miles away.
Measuring 318 feet (97 meters) in length, HMS Agamemnon joins its sister vessels HMS Astute, Ambush, Artful, Audacious, and Anson within the Royal Navy’s Astute fleet. This class represents the Navy’s most formidable and technologically sophisticated series of attack submarines. A seventh submarine, HMS Achilles, is currently being built to continue strengthening this powerful fleet.
After departing from BAE Systems in Barrow, HMS Agamemnon performed its inaugural dive in the Inner Hebrides exercise region during its transit to Faslane. Rear Admiral Andy Perks emphasized the significance of the submarine’s journey, stating: “HMS Agamemnon’s delivery reflects the dedication, skill and collaboration of thousands of people across our Defence Nuclear Enterprise, who have worked together to build one of the world’s most capable attack submarines and deliver a formidable warfighting capability for the United Kingdom.” He also expressed his enthusiasm for the addition of the vessel and its crew to their new home on the Clyde, anticipating their integration into the operational fleet.
The submarine, manned by about 100 submariners, will be thoroughly tested over the coming months as part of its sea trials. Its arrival coincided with the 125th anniversary of the launch of Holland 1, the Royal Navy’s first submarine. Commander John Gabb, HMS Agamemnon’s commanding officer, remarked on the honor of leading the vessel: “It is an enormous privilege to be the first person to command this vessel at sea. We will get to know Agamemnon well over the coming months, but this submarine is incredibly quiet, has a world-class Sonar and will be home to us all as we generate for operations.
