Stefanie Merten, also known as Alma Marter, a Leipzig-based DJ and producer, died on September 12th at the age of 32 after fighting glioblastoma, a highly aggressive brain cancer. Merten played alongside her brother as Alma & August Lilienweiss and released multiple techno records for Sonderling, a Berlin-based label. Her last performances were at Berlin clubs Sisyphos and Club OST. Merten made her HÖR debut in September 2020 and was a resident at Sanity, a club night and record label based in Leipzig.
Merten’s family announced the loss via Instagram and described her as a wonderful daughter, sister, sister-in-law, aunt, friend, and musician who brought joy to everyone around her. “With your smile, you infected the people around you, with your selfless and loving nature you gave hope and encouraged them,” they said. Merten’s family also stated that her sensitivity and talent took many people on musical journeys and that every place she went was filled with love and lightness.
Alma Marter will always be remembered for her contributions to the Berlin techno scene, where she left a significant mark. Although she had a short career, her musical journey continues to inspire millions worldwide. Merten’s announcement of her death brought fans and friends pouring out with condolences and tributes to the beloved musician.
