One of Wales’ most infamous unsolved murder cases remains under scrutiny, although a recent arrest connected to it has been dropped. Harry and Megan Tooze were found dead at their farmhouse in Llanharry, South Wales, on 26 July 1993, with shotgun wounds to their bodies in a cow shed. South Wales Police announced that an 87-year-old man, arrested in December 2023 during a forensic review of the cold case, is no longer being investigated and has been released without charge.
The Toozes had spent their day as usual, leaving their farm to collect their pensions and shop at Tesco in nearby Talbot Green before returning home. They arrived back around 11:00, and although two gunshots were heard at approximately 13:30 by neighbors, this was not considered suspicious given the rural setting of their farm. It was only when their daughter, Cheryl, failed to reach them on her typical daily call that concern arose, prompting the police to check the premises where they discovered the couple’s bodies.
Investigations revealed that both Harry, 64, and Megan, 67, had been shot in the back of the head at close range, around three feet away. Their bodies were then concealed under hay bales and carpet inside the cow shed. Detectives believe the murders did not occur in the shed itself but that the bodies were moved there post-mortem. The tragic discovery sent shockwaves through the community and set off a long-standing investigation.
Initially, the focus fell on the couple’s daughter’s boyfriend, Jonathan Jones, who was convicted of the murders and handed a life sentence in 1995. Jones, a self-employed recruitment consultant, claimed to have been in Orpington, Greater London, at the time of the killings. His partial thumbprint was found on a cup and saucer at the farm, which contributed to his arrest months after the murders. Despite this, his conviction was overturned on appeal a year later. The appellate judges criticized the original trial, highlighting police errors including a failure to properly secure the crime scene. South Wales Police remain dedicated to cracking the case and have urged anyone with new information to come forward to help bring justice for the Tooze family
