A shop in Tonteg, Rhondda Cynon Taf, known for a viral incident involving a grandmother, has once again been thrust into the spotlight after a car crashed through its entrance. The Best-One store gained widespread attention previously when Anne Hughes, a staff member, got caught on one of its shutters and was left suspended several feet above the ground. This dramatic moment was captured on CCTV and shared widely online.
Recently, CCTV footage revealed a Jaguar crashing into the shop’s front, having mounted bollards before smashing through the doors and colliding with the shop’s coffee machine. Staff present during the event were left shaken by the sudden accident. Donna Davies, who has been working at the shop for years, described the event: “The car just came straight through, it was a loud noise and we didn’t know what was happening but thought it could have been ram-raiders. It was scary.” Upon looking outside, she discovered that the elderly driver and passenger were regular customers. The driver reportedly explained that his foot slipped as he was trying to exit the vehicle, causing the car to lurch forward into the shop.
Anne Hughes’ unusual predicament from March 2024 was previously commemorated in a graffiti piece on the shop shutters by local artist Tee2Sugars. Following the recent crash, the artwork was updated to include an image of a Jaguar bursting through the shop’s front, adding a new chapter to the shop’s unique history. Donna, who had worked alongside Anne before her passing in 2025, remarked, “Anne would be laughing at this, I think she’d like the updated shutter,” noting that customers found the new addition amusing despite the initial fear surrounding the incident.
Despite the significant damage, the shop owner and family dedicated time over the weekend to repair the front and keep the store operational. Hakim Akram, the owner’s nephew and a shop employee, described the incident as surreal: “It was a bit of a shock, he just came flying through – I didn’t even know what happened until I saw the car. It was surreal and very loud. People thought it was a prank and AI when they first saw it on social media.” The family of Anne Hughes expressed relief that no serious injuries occurred. Her son, Ceri, humorously commented on the shop’s unusual streak of incidents: “Tonteg Best-One – the only shop in the UK where you can be lifted 7ft in the air on Monday and driven through on a Friday.” Anne’s grandchildren also joked that their grandmother would be pleased by the new mural, noting, “Nan always preferred a Bentley but would settle with a Jag next to her on the shutter.
