British paratrooper killed by explosion in Ukraine, coroner rules

A British paratrooper lost his life due to an explosion while supporting Ukrainian forces in the ongoing conflict with Russia, according to the findings of a coroner. The inquest into Corporal George Hooley’s death, which was partly held in private this week, established that he suffered multiple injuries from an explosion on December 6, 2025.

The 28-year-old soldier succumbed to his wounds three days later in a hospital located in Kyiv, marking the first British military casualty in Ukraine since Russia’s full-scale invasion that began in February 2022. Senior coroner Darren Salter, representing Oxfordshire, stated that the available evidence about the explosion’s details was limited; however, there were no indications that Hooley’s death was suspicious in nature.

Details regarding the exact place of the explosion remain unclear apart from it occurring away from active front-line fighting. According to the coroner’s report, prior to his passing, Hooley had been moved between multiple medical facilities within Ukraine before ultimately receiving treatment in the capital city. The UK Ministry of Defence described Hooley in a December statement as “an exceptional soldier and an impressive junior leader with extensive operational experience,” further defining the incident as a “tragic accident” that happened as he was “observing Ukrainian forces test a new defensive capability.”

Additional information about the circumstances of the explosion was not provided by the MoD when further inquiries were made. Hooley’s company commander in the Parachute Regiment reflected on his character, noting that he was “a born soldier” with a unique quality: “a deep kindness and genuine time for everyone.” Originally from Wallingford, Oxfordshire, Hooley enlisted in the regiment in June 2016 after completing his training at the Infantry Training Centre in Catterick, North Yorkshire. While the UK government has not publicly revealed the number of personnel deployed in Ukraine, it has acknowledged that a small contingent is present to assist Ukrainian troops and provide protection for diplomatic staff.

The conflict in Ukraine has endured for almost five years, with the frontline remaining largely static as neither side has achieved significant territorial advances. Russia currently holds approximately 20% of Ukraine’s territory, including a substantial portion of Donetsk. Efforts to negotiate peace have reached an impasse, with Kyiv and its European allies accusing Russian President Vladimir Putin of rejecting proposals for trilateral negotiations involving Russia, the United States, and Ukraine, while simultaneously aiming to expand Russian control over Ukrainian lands
