Exclusive Cunard Building tours return for River of Light

This autumn, visitors attending Liverpool’s stunning River of Light festival will have the exceptional opportunity to explore one of the city’s most famous landmarks from within, as exclusive guided tours of the Cunard Building make a return during the 10-day celebration.

Scheduled from Friday 23 October through Sunday 1 November and running alongside the festival, these behind-the-scenes heritage tours grant access to parts of the Grade II* listed Cunard Building that are usually off-limits to the public. Areas open for exploration include the historic basement, the former Arrivals Lounge, and the elegant Board Rooms. This initiative follows the success of earlier events that allowed visitors to experience one of Liverpool’s renowned Three Graces from an insider perspective.

The tours have been specially designed to complement Liverpool’s widely popular free light festival. Attendees can immerse themselves in the city’s rich maritime history during the day or evening, and then enjoy the vibrant, illuminated artworks that enliven the waterfront and city centre during River of Light each year.

Guided by Liverpool’s heritage experts, these small-group tours provide detailed insights into the Cunard Building’s history, its architectural highlights, and its significant role in Liverpool’s global maritime legacy. To ensure a quality experience, group sizes are kept limited, offering visitors a more intimate and up-close view of spaces that remain generally inaccessible.

The tours are available daily throughout the festival period, with options for both daytime and extended evening visits. These evening sessions are designed so guests can enjoy the light festival trail either before or after their tour. On weekends, particularly from Friday 23 to Sunday 25 October and from Saturday 31 October to Sunday 1 November, there will be an expanded schedule of tours, while weekday tours will continue at regular intervals throughout the day and evening.

Councillor Harry Doyle, Liverpool City Council’s Cabinet Member for Health, Wellbeing and Culture, highlighted the significance of the building: “The Cunard Building is one of the jewels of Liverpool’s world-famous waterfront and a powerful symbol of our city’s rich maritime heritage. These special tours will give visitors the chance to step inside one of Liverpool’s most iconic landmarks and discover the fascinating stories behind the building, while also enjoying River of Light, one of the city’s most popular cultural events. By pairing the tours with the festival, we’re creating an even richer visitor experience that combines Liverpool’s history, culture, and creativity. As River of Light transforms the city centre and waterfront with spectacular illuminated artworks, these behind-the-scenes tours will add another dimension to the programme, encouraging people to explore the heritage that has helped shape Liverpool’s internationally recognised waterfront.”
