October marks Black History Month, a period dedicated to honoring Black history, culture, and achievements, as well as recognizing the significant impact that Black communities have had in Liverpool. This year’s focus is on the theme “Honouring Our Communities.” The observance provides a timely moment to celebrate Liverpool’s Black population, share their narratives, and consider the ongoing efforts required to address racism and inequality.
Liverpool boasts the oldest Black community in Britain, with roots extending back several centuries. According to National Museums Liverpool, it is regarded as the oldest Black community in Europe. The city’s early Black settlers included sailors, freed enslaved individuals, and even the sons of African rulers pursuing education, with a presence traced to as early as the 1750s. Their ongoing influence has been essential in shaping the Liverpool we know today.
Black History Month serves to highlight not only well-known figures but also the countless families, community leaders, activists, artists, entrepreneurs, workers, and young people whose contributions might not be recorded in mainstream histories. It provides an opportunity to acknowledge these diverse stories and experiences. Importantly, the month also emphasizes that Liverpool’s Black community continues to play an active role in the city’s evolution, impacting music, culture, education, business, public services, and community life every day. Recognizing these contributions while also confronting the persistence of racism is vital to fostering a more equitable city. Residents are encouraged to engage with Liverpool’s Black history throughout October—by learning, visiting historical sites, sharing stories, and participating in related events—to honor the communities that have shaped the city and ensure their legacies endure
