Prime Minister Andy Burnham has expressed the government’s view that Iran was involved in the recent incident at RAF Fairford, which led to the arrest and subsequent release on bail of five individuals. Speaking to the BBC, Burnham mentioned that there are strong signs pointing to Iran’s participation, though he refrained from sharing additional specifics.
In response, Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi dismissed the allegations, stating that the UK leader was “barking up the wrong tree.” Araghchi also conveyed Iran’s stance on the matter via social media, suggesting that the UK’s decision to free those suspected of terrorism, allegedly working for foreign powers, revealed significant insight into the situation.
When questioned about the decision to grant bail to the suspects—a move criticized openly by then US President Donald Trump—Burnham emphasized that the individuals were released under the “strictest possible bail conditions.” Trump, speaking at the White House, expressed surprise at their release and stated, “I will tell you, I would have said, ‘don’t let them have bail’. I’m surprised that they released them. I wouldn’t have done that.”
Burnham sought to clarify the situation by reiterating the controls placed on the released men: “The authorities have this under the strongest grip and closest control, and I can assure you of that.” His remarks came shortly after US Secretary of State Marco Rubio commented that the RAF Fairford event “clearly involves the hands of a foreign actor.”
