A non-league football team has expressed gratitude to their fans after an overwhelming show of support from their entire village helped them secure victory in a contentious FA Cup replay. The match featured Mulbarton Wanderers facing off against Woodford Town and attracted widespread attention internationally after the Football Association (FA) made an uncommon decision to order a replay following a referee’s mistake.
The replay, held in Norfolk, drew a record-breaking crowd of 806 spectators. Mulbarton Wanderers emerged triumphant with a 2-0 win, advancing to the next stage of the competition. This success earned the club £3,375 from the FA Cup prize fund, as well as a home fixture against Gloucester City in the third qualifying round of the renowned tournament—the oldest football competition in the world.
Joint first team manager Danny Self conveyed his excitement about the achievement, saying, “We’re over the moon that we’ve given the fans something to shout out about. Their support was incredible to have.” Looking ahead, a victory in the upcoming round would position Mulbarton just one win away from reaching the lucrative first round proper, where they could face English Football League teams such as Sheffield Wednesday or the 2021 FA Cup champions Leicester City.
Ben Thompson, the club’s other joint manager, also addressed the fans: “[To our supporters] see you again on Saturday. It will be the biggest game in our history and we need the fans again. They’re our 12th man.” Due to the media spotlight and unprecedented interest, Mulbarton implemented advance ticketing to accommodate demand. Ashley Jarvis, who netted both goals for the side, reflected on the occasion, noting, “It was a great atmosphere. The whole village came out and we’re delighted to get the win.
