Starting from Thursday, 1st October, the operating hours for Local Recycling Centres in the Liverpool City Region will shift to their reduced winter schedule. The centres, previously open from 8.00am to 8.00pm during the summer months, will now close earlier at 5.00pm, while continuing to open at 8.00am.
There are 16 Household Waste Recycling Centres (HWRCs) throughout the Liverpool City Region, managed by Veolia on behalf of the Merseyside Recycling and Waste Authority (MRWA). These sites are equipped with special ‘Disposable Vape’ bins designed to safely collect and recycle the large quantity of vaping devices that are discarded across the country. Within Liverpool itself, two specific sites are available; one located at Old Swan on Cheadle Avenue (postcode L13 3AF), and another at Otterspool, Jericho Lane in Aigburth (postcode L17 5AR).
Lesley Worswick, Chief Executive of MRWA, explained the rationale behind the change in opening hours: “We shorten the hours over the winter to coincide with the darker nights over the forthcoming months.” She also highlighted the varied range of materials that can be recycled at the centres, including batteries, cans, cardboard, garden waste, glass bottles, wood, white goods, as well as less common items such as used cooking oil, clothes, hard plastics, and electrical goods. Paul Cannon, General Manager at Veolia, added a safety advisory for visitors during the winter months, saying, “We ask residents coming to the Household Waste Recycling Centres during the winter months to take extra care during their visit. Wearing sturdy shoes with good grip, using gloves when handling materials, and keeping children and pets safely inside vehicles will keep both residents and our staff safe so that we can all recycle as much as possible.”
Residents are reminded that due to the popularity of these centres, especially during busy periods, planning visits carefully is advisable. For those arriving in vans or towing large trailers, advanced booking systems are in place to help manage traffic and ensure smooth operations.
