In the early hours of the morning, two ATMs were forcibly removed from the walls of a Royal Bank of Scotland branch located on Eastgate in Peebles, southern Scotland. The dramatic incident involved the use of a telescopic forklift, which was driven into the building to gain access. Following the attack, the machines were loaded onto a horsebox and driven away. Authorities subsequently closed Peebles High Street to vehicular traffic as they investigated the scene.
According to Police Scotland, the crime involved several vehicles entering the area around 3:00 AM. These included a grey Audi sedan, a grey Isuzu D-Max pickup truck towing the horsebox, and a Manitou telehandler—the forklift that was used to ram the bank building. Both the pickup and the horsebox had been reported stolen, and the forklift, also suspected to be stolen, was abandoned at the site after the cash machines were taken.
Witnesses reported seeing three men dressed in dark clothing leaving the scene in the Audi and pickup, heading toward Northgate. Detective Inspector Keith Sinclair described the event as “a planned series of crimes, involving stolen vehicles, to target the cash machines.” Investigations are ongoing, with police reviewing CCTV footage and seeking additional information from the public. Sinclair urged anyone with knowledge about the incident or who spotted the suspicious vehicles to come forward.
Video footage shared on social media captured the forklift dragging the ATMs out of the damaged bank building. In the clips, one person dressed entirely in black can be seen directing the operation, signaling the forklift as it carefully placed the machines onto the horsebox. The incident has also impacted local transport, with Borders Buses announcing a suspension of service at the nearby bus stop until further notice
