In 2019, Jarvs Tasker had to leave her teaching profession at the age of 28 due to a chronic illness. Since then, her career path has taken a remarkable turn. Now, she runs Jarvs Indie Insights, a company specializing in communication and marketing within the gaming sector, earning twice her previous annual income.
Recently, Tasker visited the University of Suffolk’s e-sport facility in Ipswich to honor independent game developers and studios. Reflecting on her career shift, she remarked, “I can comfortably say it probably would have taken me about 20 years in teaching to earn what I make now.”
Initially, after leaving teaching, Tasker began volunteering for PlayStation’s YouTube channel. She noted many skills from teaching translated well to her new role, explaining, “Managing a community is very similar to managing a class of kids, so there’s a lot of crossover skills there.” She also pointed out that gaming is an industry where many people enter later in life.
Currently based in Exeter, Tasker highlighted the lack of awareness among young people about the diverse opportunities within the gaming world. She emphasized the importance of passion in the industry, stating, “The video games community is very strong, and they will champion people that love what they do, but they’ll also notice if you’re in it just for the money.” On the subject of artificial intelligence, she praised the industry’s resistance to it, adding, “I think as an industry we should be really proud of the fact that we’re still championing human creativity and that the audience is also on board with that.
