Foreign Secretary Ed Miliband met with Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi during the UN General Assembly in New York City, where he firmly conveyed that the United Kingdom will not accept any intimidation, threats, or hostile actions occurring on British soil. The discussions covered various critical issues, including threats posed by Iranian-linked groups within the UK, attacks targeting the British Jewish community, the ongoing conflict in the Middle East, and the situation involving a detained British couple in Iran.
According to the Foreign Office, Miliband emphasized the UK’s steadfast determination to confront and counter threats connected to Iran on UK territory, specifically referencing recent attacks such as an arson incident involving Jewish community ambulances in Golders Green earlier in the year. UK intelligence initially approached the investigation with neutrality but eventually concluded that the evidence pointed toward involvement by Iran or its proxy organizations. Additionally, in July, a cyberattack forced the shutdown of a small power plant in the UK, an incident reportedly carried out by hackers linked to the Iranian regime.
The conversations between Miliband and Araghchi also touched on the wider regional conflict, with Miliband urging Iran to pursue de-escalation and diplomatic solutions rather than continuing hostilities. He underscored the importance of reopening the Strait of Hormuz, a crucial maritime passage that had been effectively closed by Iran following retaliatory strikes after the killing of Iran’s supreme leader in a US-Israeli attack earlier that year. This closure impacted global oil and gas shipments, leading to significant economic consequences. Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian stated at the UN that any peace agreement must include an end to the US blockade restricting Iranian shipping through this waterway. Pezeshkian also rejected US President Donald Trump’s threats, insisting that Iran would never submit and that its resistance would only intensify amid sanctions and pressure.
Miliband additionally raised the case of British couple Lindsay and Craig Foreman, who have been imprisoned in Iran for more than 20 months following their arrest during a motorbike journey through the country. Convicted of espionage charges they deny, the Foremans received 10-year sentences earlier in the year. Miliband reiterated the UK’s call for their immediate release and affirmed that their well-being remains a high priority for the British government.
