On Friday, the Garvaghy Road Residents’ Coalition expressed strong anger over a recent decision affecting their community, describing themselves as “furious” and concerned about potential disturbances during the upcoming weekend. The group highlighted a sense of fear among residents about what might unfold as a result of this ruling.
Breandán Mac Cionnaith, representing the coalition, conveyed the depth of emotion in the area, characterizing the community’s reaction as one of both shock and anger. He emphasized that for the past 28 years, the neighborhood had largely managed to prevent direct confrontations. However, he believes the latest ruling by the parades commission now sets the stage for possible conflict: “After 28 years of this community being able to avoid confrontation, the parades commission by their decision is creating the grounds for a confrontation.”
In contrast, DUP MLA Carla Lockhart sought to reassure local residents, stating that they have “nothing to fear” and warning against succumbing to panic or hysteria. She described the event as “thirty-five men walking down a road silently with no bands in an orderly fashion,” adding that those participating in the parade are individuals who live, work, and conduct business within the community. Lockhart further appealed to Sinn Féin to demonstrate political leadership and help maintain peace within the area.
Responding to the situation, Sinn Féin President Mary-Lou McDonald labeled the decision to permit the parade as “utterly reckless,” asserting that it blatantly disregards the rights of the Garvaghy Road community. She described the circumstances as grave and warned of the potential consequences stemming from such recklessness.
