Edinburgh Zoo’s red panda, Bruce, recently underwent a dental procedure that made a visit to the dentist appear effortless. The animal keepers initially grew concerned when Bruce stopped eating his food, prompting a thorough health evaluation.
Veterinarians from the Royal Zoological Society of Scotland examined Bruce and determined he was experiencing a toothache. To address the issue, the eleven-year-old red panda was placed under general anaesthesia for a careful tooth extraction.
During the procedure, Bruce was laid on his back while the problematic tooth was removed. The veterinary team also conducted a full health check to ensure there were no other underlying conditions affecting him.
Having arrived at Edinburgh Zoo in 2016, Bruce was pronounced healthy after the treatment and was subsequently returned to his enclosure. The endangered species continues to thrive with the zoo’s attentive care
