Daniel Thomas, an anti-migrant campaigner, was taken into custody following a video that appeared to show him damaging a boat in the English Channel with a knife. The incident involved a vessel that was carrying an emergency responder at the time of the attack.
The Hampshire and Isle of Wight Constabulary reported that the 37-year-old man, who does not have a fixed address, was arrested on suspicion of criminal damage with intent to endanger life, as well as for jeopardizing the safety of a ship. He was detained on Wednesday and remains held by the authorities.
The police began their inquiry after reviewing footage that Thomas, also known among his followers as Danny Tommo, had streamed on social media the previous day. A French coastguard officer was present on the boat during the incident, which had been transporting approximately 50 migrants who had traveled from Normandy and were later processed upon arrival in Dover.
The arrest was widely shared on social media by far-right activist Tommy Robinson, who framed the detention as part of efforts to “stop the invasion of our country.” Thomas has a history of organizing anti-migrant demonstrations, including protests in Dover and Portsmouth earlier this month that involved large groups, some wearing black balaclavas and blocking roadways.
