The demand for blepharoplasty procedures, which typically cost thousands of pounds in the UK, has risen sharply in recent years, driven by an aesthetic trend focused on tightening, smoothing, and lifting the face. This increase has prompted concerns among surgeons, who report complications linked to clinics operating across mainland Europe, Africa, and Asia. When adverse effects occur, the lack of adequate aftercare abroad often results in significant pressure on the NHS in the UK.
Among those affected is Nikita, a 31-year-old from Dublin who sought to make her eyes more defined. Unable to afford the steep cost of over €4,000 (£3,400) for upper eyelid surgery in Ireland, she found an alternative via TikTok—a Dutch company called Faceland offering the procedure for around €750 (£650). Nikita described the Düsseldorf clinic as a “conveyor belt” with patients coming and going continuously. Faceland claims to have performed almost 3,000 such procedures for UK patients at its clinics in the Netherlands, Germany, and Switzerland since October 2024 and reports that fewer than 1% of procedures have resulted in complaints, though this figure does not account for all those requiring revision surgeries.
While many patients report satisfaction with their results, numerous others have experienced severe complications. UK surgeons have warned of cases where patients return unable to close their eyes properly after surgeries abroad. Nikita herself was surprised by the invasiveness of the procedure, comparing it initially to minimal treatments like Botox. She recounted feeling intense pain during the operation despite the use of local anesthesia and experienced significant distress when the doctor stitched her eyelids. Others have reported distressing outcomes, including a woman who had to tape her eyes shut because excessive skin had been removed, and another fearing the loss of her sight.
Problems after these surgeries are compounded by insufficient aftercare. For example, Laura (not her real name) underwent a blepharoplasty at Faceland’s Amsterdam clinic in June. While her initial procedure seemed successful, after removing her stitches at home, she faced reopened wounds and infections, leading to multiple emergency visits. Despite her efforts to contact Faceland’s emergency helpline, she was unable to get timely support, causing her significant pain and anxiety. Several patients have shared similar accounts, expressing frustration over limited follow-up care and difficulty accessing assistance once returning home. Medical professionals warn that proper post-operative care, ideally available around the clock, is vital to safely manage recovery, and that the lower prices charged by some clinics may reflect compromised standards
