Italian authorities are actively searching for a British man who disappeared while attempting to rescue a teenager in Lake Como. The incident occurred on Monday afternoon near the western shore of the lake. According to local officials and the coastguard, the individual, believed to be in his late thirties, jumped into the water to assist two people—a father and his 16-year-old son—who were struggling to stay afloat.
At the time, the man was on a boating excursion with the family, with whom he was friends. Although a passing boat successfully rescued the father and son, the British man has not resurfaced since the rescue attempt. The UK Foreign Office confirmed that they are assisting the missing man’s family and are maintaining contact with Italian authorities.
The search operation includes various resources such as a helicopter, divers, and several boat units from the fire department, coastguard, and state police. Given that parts of the lake reach depths exceeding 250 meters in the area of the incident, rescuers are preparing to use two underwater robots to help examine the lake bed, where diving is not feasible.
Initially, the alarm was raised at approximately 13:30 local time after the man saw his friends struggling and plunged into the water to help. The teenager’s mother, who had stayed on the boat with her younger son, notified emergency services when she observed the man submerge. Following the rescue, the father and son received medical treatment for early signs of hypothermia, while the mother and younger child, who had drifted roughly 600 meters from shore, were safely brought back to land. An earlier coastguard statement incorrectly attributed the rescue attempt to the father, but this was later corrected to confirm the British man’s involvement. Lake Como, situated about 30 miles north of Milan, is a well-known tourist destination with over 78,000 foreign visitors recorded in 2024. However, from September onward, water temperatures in the area tend to drop significantly
