Charges have been brought against a man accused of causing death by dangerous driving in a crash that tragically claimed six lives, including two children. The collision occurred on 21 July 2024 on the A61 road between Barnsley and Wakefield. Among the fatalities were Shannen Morgan and Shane Roller, along with their two daughters, nine-year-old Rubie and four-year-old Lillie.
Also killed in the incident were Christopher and Janine Barton, a married couple from Barnsley, who were riding a motorcycle at the time of the accident. The motorcycle collided head-on with the family’s silver Ford Focus, which was driven by Shane Roller. The crash happened near Staincross and Newmillerdam on a single-carriageway stretch limited to 50 mph. According to the hearing at Wakefield Coroner’s Court, the motorcycle was overtaking another vehicle when the collision took place.
The impact caused the car to spin off the road and catch fire, making it impossible for emergency responders to free the occupants. All four passengers inside the vehicle were pronounced dead at the scene. A pathologist later determined that Christopher Barton died from head and chest injuries, while Janine Barton was thrown onto a nearby golf course, with chest injuries cited as the cause of her death.
Christopher Cockell, aged 50, has been charged with six counts of causing death by dangerous driving and is expected to appear at Leeds Magistrates’ Court in October. He had previously faced a charge of failing to stop after the collision, according to West Yorkshire Police. The Barton family had recently marked their 25th wedding anniversary, and their son honored them as devoted parents who always put him first.
